Jeongdong Theater

Wheelchair users can attend shows at Jeongdong Theater (국립정동극장), but only by using an outdoor lift that you arrange by phone in advance. The theater is one floor below ground with no elevator, and visitors on foot use outdoor stairs.

Wheelchair
Partly accessibleThe main entrance is level, but the B1 theater has no elevator, so you go down by outdoor lift. Users of power wheelchairs of 150 kg or more may need to transfer to a manual wheelchair.

Heads-up

If you use a wheelchair or have trouble moving around, arrive at least 30 minutes before the show. One lift round trip takes 20 minutes.

The lift is outdoors, so weather or an impact can affect how it runs. If the weather looks bad, call 02-751-1500 before you set out.

Getting in

Entrance
The main entrance is level, with no step. The approach is wide and free of obstacles.
Lift
There is no elevator, so wheelchair users go from the ground floor to B1 by a lift on the outdoor stairs. If you use a wheelchair or have trouble moving around, book by phone at 02-751-1500 (+82-2-751-1500 from abroad). Ask for the lift when you call.
Power wheelchairs
The lift's stated limit is 300 kg, but the lift is old. If your power wheelchair weighs 150 kg or more, you may have to move to one of the theater's manual wheelchairs. Check the weight with the theater before you come.
Parking
Parking space at the theater is short, so use public transport or a nearby lot. Accessible parking exists, but its exact location and number of spaces are not known.
Route
From City Hall Station, Exit 1 (Line 1) or Exit 12 (Line 2), it is about a 10-minute walk along the Deoksugung stone wall.

Inside

Stairs
Visitors on foot go down outdoor stairs to B1. If stairs are hard for you, call 02-751-1500 and ask about the lift.
Wheelchair seats
The theater has 2 wheelchair seats. Sources differ on the number, with some saying 4. Ask when you book by phone at 02-751-1500. The seating chart on the theater's website shows where they are.
Seating
Aisles and stairs in the seating area are fairly steep, so avoid changing seats during the show. If steps are hard, ask the theater about the route to orchestra pit seats (rows D, E and F) or seats A1–7, B1–8 or C1–7. These have no steps between rows.
Toilets
Accessible toilets are in the B1 theater lobby, one inside the men's room and one inside the women's room. The toilets are small and can get busy just before a show, so go early.
Help
You can borrow one of the theater's 2 manual wheelchairs. If you need help at the theater, tell a house manager.
